Estrogen insensitivity syndrome

EIS
English
People with estrogen insensitivity syndrome (EIS) have a genetic variation in which their bodies do not respond to estrogen. People with XX chromosomes and EIS are usually born with a vulva and vagina, may have a small uterus and enlarged ovaries that later develop multiple cysts, and may produce very high levels of estrogen that their bodies do not recognize. In adolescence, they will most likely not experience the changes associated with a typical estrogen puberty such as breast development or menstruation. They may instead develop pubic hair and acne due to the influence of androgens. People with XY chromosomes can also be born with EIS, and they may or may not experience variations in their other hormone production, testicular development, and development of secondary sex characteristics as a result.
